Matthew Steinbach is the Chief Executive Officer of British Columbia Golf, where he leads the Provincial Sport Organization through a period of transformation—honouring its rich history while modernizing for the future. A strong believer in the transformational power of sport, Steinbach sees golf as a vehicle for individual and societal wellbeing, offering benefits that are physical, mental, social, and spiritual.
His passion for golf's broader impact is reflected in his academic work. Steinbach is completing a Master of Science in Sport Psychology at the University of Stirling, with a focus on Organizational Sport Psychology and the societal benefits of golf. In support of this work, he was awarded the 2024 PGA of Canada Ian Webb Scholarship and the PGA of BC Gibson Family Scholarship.
Prior to his role as CEO, Steinbach spent eight years as the Head Coach of Simon Fraser University’s NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams, Canada’s only NCAA golf program, guiding them to record-breaking results and national recognition. He was named the 2020 NCAA West Region Men’s Coach of the Year and earned multiple GNAC Coach of the Year honours (Women’s: 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024; Men’s: 2018, 2020, 2023). In 2017, he was named PGA of BC Lower Mainland Coach of the Year and continues to rank among the province’s leaders in the PGA of BC Professional Development Program.
Originally from Red Deer, Alberta, Steinbach began his collegiate golf career at NCAA Division I Central Connecticut State University before transferring to Simon Fraser University in 2002. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2006. Following graduation, he spent seven years with General Mills Canada in progressing sales and customer development roles across Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver.
Steinbach returned to golf in 2015, joining the PGA of Canada and working for British Columbia Golf as Golf Participation Manager while also serving as an Assistant Coach at SFU. His journey reflects a blend of corporate experience, academic inquiry, and a deep commitment to golf’s role in sport, community, and personal growth.
